Nanoporous materials: properties, applications and opportunities

Abstract

After discovery periodic nanoporous silica materials by the Mobile scientists nobody could imagine, what huge interest these materials would draw. Regularly ordered pore system with narrow pore size distribution made these materials challenging for applications in the fields of adsorption, catalysis, optics or for the preparation of advanced magnetic materials. For the potential applications of the periodic nanoporous silica the modification and/or preparation of silica composites is required. It will be shown in this contribution how the incorporation of iron oxide nanoparticles into the periodic mesoporous matrix influences the magnetic properties of the composite material. In the second part of the contribution the use of periodic porous silica as a tool for vectored delivery of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs will be discussed. We will show how the modification of the silica influences kinetics of the drug release. In the final part of our contribution the adsorption properties of the nanoporous silica are to be presented. The chemical modification of the periodic nanoporous silica can lead to the preparation of new adsorbents for selective adsorption of carbon dioxide.
